The correct medical term for Attention Deficit Disorder is ADHD. There are 3 subtypes of ADHD: Predominantly inattentive, Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and Combined. Through out this newsletter and the ADHD relates sites linked in this newsletter the terms ADHD, AD/HD, and ADD are used interchangeably.

Being on Time
Tara McGillicuddy

As an Adult with ADHD the whole concept of time still seems like a foreign concept to me. When I observe how much importance our society places on time and being on time it just makes no sense to me. Even though I don’t really agree with the importance of being on time I do understand that in order function in society it’s very important to be on time.

There are some things that I don’t agree with and choose to fight or go against. I’ve come to realize that protesting being on time or being late just hurts me in the long run. It’s important for me and most other people with ADHD to develop ways to be on time instead of trying to get others to just accept our lateness.

The simple truth is if a person is continuously late for work by just 5 minutes there’s a good chance that person will get fired even if he or she does an amazing job at work. It also negatively affects people socially when they are late by 5 or 10 minutes. The person on the other end usually takes it personally. In most cases a scientific explanation about how the brain of a person with ADHD works doesn’t matter to the person on the other end.

I know being on time isn’t as simple as “just do it”. If people with ADHD could just do it we would be doing it already. However it is important to learn and develop individual strategies to be on time. If going at it alone hasn’t helped maybe it’s time to get help from somebody else!

An ADHD Coach can really help a person with ADHD develop individual strategies and systems to be on time. Learning from others through ADD Coaching Programs, support groups or online communities are also options. If you are late and being late is causing problems then you owe it to yourself to find a way to be on time!

Featured Living with ADD Story

My name is Jordan and I am a 37-year-old male residing in Atlanta. I was diagnosed with ADHD in December 2006 and I have started taking Adderall. If you are so inclined, here is a little about me and my story.

I have always thought that I have a wondering mind and have always considered that I daydream too much. Additionally, in elementary school my report cards always indicated, Jordan does not apply himself to his full potential and does not use his time wisely. College was definitely a challenge for me, and my parents, as I changed my major 3 times, and finally after 7 years, I graduated with a Nursing degree. I started my Nursing career working in a busy Emergency Department that provided lots of stimuli and I excelled in that role. However, as you can imagine, I became very burned out and resented the horrible shifts that were always assigned to me.
